Description

Learn the basics of working with knit fabrics to sew a t-shirt or sweatshirt.

The idea of sewing knit fabrics can be scary for those who have only sewn with wovens. But knit fabrics are generally forgiving and beginner-friendly, without the need for the types of fitting adjustments that often accompany the construction of woven garments. There is also a myth out there that you need an overlocker to sew stretch fabric, which is definitely not true (although an overlocker does make the process very quick!).

This workshop is suitable for people at the beginner plus level and up. It is assumed you already know how to use a sewing machine and have used one to make simple projects. If you are unsure of your current sewing level and need help working out whether this workshop is for you, please contact us prior to booking and we will be happy to help.

In this workshop you will learn some introductory techniques for working with knit fabrics and make a garment using a pattern of your choice (suggestions given below). Correct pattern layout and cutting out, seam allowances, thread options, choice of stitch, using the right needle and how to sew necklines and ribbing all form part of what will be covered.

Whilst we recommend making a round neck t-shirt or sweatshirt in this workshop, we can also support people who would like to make something more complicated (for example, a hoodie). Depending on your chosen project and sewing experience, you may not get it completed on the day. However, you will leave with a personalised plan to help you independently finish or options for additional support.

It is an expectation that prior to attending this workshop you have purchased a pattern, and if it’s a PDF pattern that you have printed your pattern. You also need to have purchased, washed and ironed your fabric. We are happy to provide advice and suggestions on suitable fabric for this workshop if you are unsure.
