This series of five evening workshops is for people who are brand new to sewing and want to gain foundational skills. No previous knowledge is assumed or expected.
Bring along your machine (if you have one) or use one of ours. You will learn how the machine works, the basics of sewing, and complete two projects over the course of the workshop sessions. All patterns, fabric and thread are included. You will need a basic sewing kit (dressmaking scissors, pins, stitch ripper, hand sewing needles, tape measure, tailors chalk)- you can purchase a kit containing these items (plus some other goodies) from us for an additional $60 if you wish.
Outline of course content:
• Familiarisation- controls on the machine and what they do
• How to thread the machine
• Practise sewing of basic stitches, maintaining seam allowances, and finishing seam allowances using zig zag stitch
• Basic machine troubleshooting
• Project 1- cut out and sew a simple tote bag
• Pattern terminology
• Using pattern information to choose an appropriate size
• Pattern layouts, fabric grain and cutting out your pattern
• Order of construction and accuracy in aligning fabric pieces
• Project 2- sew a pair of pyjama shorts

Target Sewing Level: Absolute Beginners
You need: sewing machine (if you have one) in good working order (can be brand new in box), sewing machine manual, all accessories for sewing machine (feet, bobbins, power cord, foot pedal), basic sewing kit (can be purchased from Weft and Warp), food or snacks. We have four sewing machines available for use if you don’t have a machine- please let us know if you would like one reserved for you.
Included:
- all sewing patterns, fabric and thread- approximately $100 RRP value
- 12.5 hours of tuition with a maximum of 4 students in the class
- use of equipment and machines in space, tea and coffee, use of kitchen space
- discount on items purchased while attending session.
Skills covered: use of sewing machine, threading the machine, sewing basic straight stitches, other stitches, cutting out fabric, maintaining seam allowances, finishing seam allowances with zig zag, order of construction and accuracy in putting pieces together, interpreting and following pattern instructions, basic fitting of garments and how to choose the right size, and basic troubleshooting of machine problems
