If you've been thinking about learning how to sew knit fabrics, this is the workshop for you. Learn the fundamentals of working with knit fabrics and create a sweatshirt- perfect for winter!
Why choose a sweatshirt as your first knit sewing project? It's arguably the easiest garment to make as a first-timer, especially if you're making an adult-sized one. Sweatshirting fabric, such as fleece, is generally easier to work with than jersey. Plus, it's easier to get a good finish with cuffs rather than hems first time around.
Suitable for people at the beginner plus level and up, it's assumed you already know how to use a sewing machine and have used one to make simple garment projects. Unsure of your current sewing level or need help working this out? Please contact us prior to booking and we will be happy to help.
In this workshop you will learn some introductory techniques for working with knit fabrics and make a garment using a pattern of your choice (suggestions given below). Correct pattern layout and cutting out, seam allowances, thread options, choice of stitch, using the right needle and how to sew necklines and ribbing all form part of what will be covered.
Whilst we recommend making a round/ crew neck sweatshirt in this workshop, we can also support raglan sleeve patterns if this style suits you better. This workshop is not designed for sewing hoodies or zipped jackets. Depending on your chosen project and sewing experience, you may not get it completed on the day. However, you will leave with a personalised plan to help you independently finish or options for additional support.
It is an expectation that prior to attending this workshop you have purchased a pattern, and if it’s a PDF pattern that you have printed your pattern. You also need to have purchased, washed and ironed your fabric. We are happy to provide advice and suggestions on suitable fabric for this workshop if you are unsure.
